Raise awareness among your employees.
It is very important to clearly explain to employees what phishing emails are and why it is dangerous to follow the instructions in these emails.
Repeat the communication about such emails several times a year. Problems with this type of email often make the news or appear in newspapers. These news reports are also a great opportunity to inform your employees about the dangers.
Do not forget about new employees. It may be helpful to include information about these emails in the welcome package for new staff.
If you know that phishing emails are circulating, it is best to warn your employees about this as soon as possible. You can also create an internal email address for reporting such emails.
Where can you report phishing attempts?
You can always advise your employees to report phishing attempts via the email address suspect@safeonweb.be. Safe on Web is part of the Belgian Centre for Cyber Security.
On their website you will find additional tips on how to deal with all forms of cybercrime.
What if things go wrong?
If a phishing attempt succeeds despite all your efforts, it is best to file a complaint with the police as soon as possible. You can also later provide a statement as a victim to the public prosecutor's office. This way, you will be kept informed if a judicial investigation is initiated.
