Next phase of digitalisation of government communication: e-box from 1 May 2026

The current government also wants to digitalise communication within the government as much as possible. In doing so, paper communication with both citizens and entrepreneurs is gradually being replaced by digital alternatives.

The government will make even more intensive use of the e-Box for entrepreneurs (e-Box Enterprise) and the e-Box for citizens (My eBox).

This digitalisation of communication with you as a citizen will take a big step forward on 1 May 2026.

The e-Box for the entrepreneur

As an entrepreneur, you are probably already familiar with the e-Box Enterprise: an electronic mailbox used by the government (e.g. FPS Finance,  …) to communicate with you as an entrepreneur.

Did you know there is also an electronic mailbox for communication with you as a citizen: My eBox? The aim is to digitalise communication and to provide one place where you as a citizen can receive messages from many different government services. Today, more than 800 government services and organisations already use this.

What changes from 1 May 2026?

To boost this digitalisation, from 1 May 2026 all government institutions that send more than 20,000 letters per year will be required, before sending any paper letters to you as a citizen, to check whether you have activated your My eBox.

I have already activated my My eBox

In that case, those government institutions will send all correspondence exclusively via your eBox, unless it concerns forms for which no digital version yet exists.

I have not yet activated my My eBox

Then nothing changes and you will continue to receive all communication on paper.

 

 

Do I as a citizen benefit from activating My eBox?

Just like the E-Box Enterprise, activating your eBox-Citizen has many advantages.

  • All official communication is centralised in one easy-to-access place;
  • High level of security (less risk of fraud, spam or hacking);
  • Used by all government institutions (municipal, regional and federal);
  • Increasingly used by other organisations, such as banks, health insurance funds and insurance companies.
