The Written Student Employment Contract
The establishment of a written student employment contract is not only mandatory but also essential if you wish to benefit from reduced social security contributions.
For further information regarding the characteristics of this contract, please consult our fact sheet on the student employment contract on Lex4You.
Securex also provides a student contract template for your use.
The Dimona Declaration at the Latest at the Start of Employment
From the moment the student begins working, you are obliged to submit a Dimona declaration.
Furthermore, the benefit of reduced contributions is only applicable if the employer has submitted a Dimona declaration for the student on time, specifically at the latest at the moment of the start of employment. The Dimona declaration allows for the reservation of the remaining hours from the 650-hour quota.
When the employment spans multiple quarters, a Dimona declaration must be submitted per quarter. You can find more information on the Dimona for students in the fact sheet "Student Work - Aspects of Social Security" on Lex4You.
Sufficient Remuneration
Are you providing adequate remuneration? For further information on this subject, please consult our news article « How much should you pay your student? ».
Compliance with the 650-Hour Annual Quota
In 2023 and 2024, the quota was set at 600 hours. Since January 1st, 2025, the quota for student work has returned to 475 hours. However, the Arizona government has decided to permanently raise the applicable ceiling for student work to 650 hours per calendar year. Therefore, your students can work 650 hours in 2025.
Upon your request, your student must provide you with a certificate that allows you to know their balance. The student can easily check their quota by downloading the student@work application for free.
From What Age Can You Employ a Student Worker?
Currently, a student employment contract can be concluded by a young person aged 15, provided they are no longer subject to full-time compulsory education. This condition will be lifted by the Arizona government. Consequently, you will be able to employ a student worker from the age of 15.
The Work Regulations
Have you provided your student with the work regulations of your company?
You are required to provide your student with a copy of the work regulations in force within your company and to have them sign an acknowledgment of receipt of these work regulations.
Insurance Against Industrial Accidents
You are required to insure your student against industrial accidents, just as you would for any other worker. If you do not employ ordinary workers, consider obtaining this insurance.
The Prior Consultation of Your Prevention Advisor
Students must be subject to the general health monitoring applicable to other workers.
In addition to this general monitoring, there is a specific health monitoring that has been introduced to account for certain characteristics specific to young people. For these reasons, some young individuals must always undergo a prior health assessment (for example, minor students).
When you employ a student, you must also conduct a specific risk analysis to determine if there are activities that pose a higher risk to young people compared to other workers.
Be aware that certain activities (exposure to harmful substances, use of dangerous machinery) and certain workplaces are prohibited for students.
