Changes to Basic Knowledge of Business Management in Wallonia
The Walloon parliament has decided that the mandatory basic knowledge of business management as a requirement for new self-employed individuals will be abolished from 1.10.2025. However, the obligation to proove professional competence will still apply to certain professions, such as restaurant owners, bakers and pastry chefs, roofers, and heating installers.
When Will the Requirement End?
The removal of the basic knowledge of business management requirement is set to take effect on October 1, 2025.
Reasons for Removing This Requirement
The Walloon government aims to create a simpler entrepreneurial environment for start-up companies with this reform. This measure is in line with previous decisions made by Flanders and Brussels, where the requirement for basic knowledge of business management was abolished in 2018 and 2024, respectively.
Research indicates that removing this administrative barrier is beneficial for entrepreneurship, particularly among young people and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, while it has shown little impact on preventing bankruptcies.
