I want to be self-employed.
What are the criteria?

According to the law there are three criteria for starters.

  • Obligation 1: Are you of age?
o Only those who have come of age can start up their own business.

  • Obligation 1: Are you entitled to work in Belgium?
o You must be Belgian or be from one of the member states of the EEA (European Economic Area). If you are not entitled to an exemption, you will need a professional card.

  • Obligation 3: Merchants have to provide proof of their entrepreneurial skills.
o You must be able to show that you have a grounding in business management.
o You can also be temporarily or permanently exempt
o For some professions (e.g. hairdresser, garage mechanic, contractor, restaurant owner, ...) you also need to show that you have the right qualifications. Check here to see whether your profession requires specific conditions.
