Formalities?
Every starter must comply with a number of obligations. These are outlined below.
Open a business bank account
Choose a financial institution and open an account for your daily business transactions. The account must be in your name (for a sole proprietor) or in the company’s name.
Apply for permits
If you want to peddle goods, you need a pedlar’s licence from your municipality. And anyone wanting to sell or cut up meat, must have a butcher's or pork-butcher's licence, allocated by the FOD Economy, SME, Self-employed and Energy.

Register your company with the Kruispuntbank van Ondernemingen (KBO)
You will need the following details in order to submit your declaration correctly to the KBO:
- account number of your business bank account and name of the bank;
- proof of your entrepreneurial skills;
- any previous permits;
- description of the activities you want to perform;
- name of your business;
- social security number;
- current VAT number, allocated by the registry or other KBO initiators.
In exchange for submitting details of your business, you and each of your branches will be allocated a unique business number. From that moment onwards these numbers must always be mentioned on any commercial documents (invoices, letters, orders, …). Activate your VAT number
If you are performing an activity that makes you VAT liable, you must also report to your local VAT monitoring office with a declaration of work start (form 604A). On this you will indicate your VAT system and your tax domicile. Ask your accountant for advice on how to fill in the form.

Apply for additional permits
Additional permits are required especially in the transport and construction sector. For example, you must register as a contractor before starting your activities. Or you will need a licence for transporting foodstuffs.

Register with a social security fund
Your registration with a social security fund must be done within ninety days. Take the easy option and contact Securex Integrity , the Securex social security fund.
Register with a health insurer
If you are already registered with a health insurer, then all you need to do is change your status to self-employed. Alternatively, we can quickly sort out your new registration.
