If you live or work in Belgium, you are legally obliged to register with a Belgian health insurer. This registration entitles you to reimbursement of your health care costs and possibly a replacement income in the event of being unable to work.

Via the mandatory health insurance, your health insurer pays the majority of your health care costs. Any costs for a one or two-persons room or higher fee are not covered by the mandatory health insurance. You are therefore advised to take out hospitalisation insurance.
If you stop your professional activity for at least six weeks after giving birth, you are entitled to a fixed payment.
If, due to sickness or accident, you are unable to work, you are entitled to a replacement income because of your inability to work from the 31st day onwards. You are legally obliged, however, to inform the advising physician of your health insurer within 28 days.
