To what am I entitled?

You will not receive any child benefit as a self-employed person. However, your social contributions do entitle you to a child benefit for your children. This is an important difference: Your children will receive the amount of the child benefit themselves.

The obligation to pay child benefit however is the duty of the employer of one of both parents first and foremost. But if neither the mother, nor the father have an employer, i.e., if both parents are self-employed, then Securex Integrity will intervene.

The law has set out two forms:

  • Birth premium: A once-only premium to the amount of €1,107.80 for the first child (and for all children in the case of multiples) and €833.49 for every next child. Every adopted child is entitled to €1,107.80.
  • Basic benefit, orphans' benefit and disability benefit: A monthly premium. The premium per child will be reduced as you have more children.

Who is entitled to child benefit?

Your social contributions entitle you to child benefit, for all underage, school-age children, who are part of your family => CELINE, préciser lien What’s more, you are also entitled to child benefit for all your children of age, until the age of 25 on condition that they:

  • Are associated with an employer under an apprenticeship agreement:
  • Are students or are preparing a graduate thesis;
  • Are registered as a jobseeker with the Flemish Employment Agency.

Disabled children are entitled to higher child benefit until age 21.

Changes in one’s family or professional situation

Is your spouse changing jobs? This can be relevant for child benefit. Immediately notify your advisor. He or she will explain the impact of this change on your child benefit.

A birth, adoption, divorce or death in your family will also impact your child benefit. Your adviser will discuss this in greater detail with you.
