The motivation model

Why do you need motivated employees?

Motivated employees perform better. That is something that we know from practice. And a series of scientific studies bear this out: motivated employees are sick less often, are less likely to leave your business and work more productively. They are also more willing to change.
In short: motivation is an essential quality of good employees. And thus it is best to examine the motivation level of your teams.

How do we test the motivation of your employees?

We provide your employees with a scientifically prepared questionnaire. The questions therein evaluate three basic human psychological needs and two types of motivation. We obtain the score of your company on many Key Performance Indicators (KPI) based on the answers given by your employees.

  • Basic needs: we investigate the satisfaction of the innate and universal basic needs of your employees. This is because satisfaction releases energy and stimulates optimal motivation, thereby greatly raising the employees’ motivation level (quantity of motivation) in a desirable manner (quality of motivation).

    • Autonomy: do your employees experience enough freedom in their work?
    • Belongingness: do your employees feel part of a larger whole?
    • Competence: do your employees feel that they are proficient in their work?

  • Autonomous motivation: we investigate the extent to which your employees are self-motivated. Do your employees like doing their work? Do they find it interesting and meaningful? Does it fit in with their professional plans?

  • Controlled motivation: we assess the motivation that derives from a sense of obligation or from pressure. Does your employee perform his duties because he would otherwise feel bad? Does he see his job as an obligation? Does he feel constrained or pressurised by others?

What results can you expect?

The answers of the employees who participate in the study shall be incorporated into overall reports and graphics. You will understand the intensity and quality of their motivation. After our study, our consultants will provide you with policy-supportive advice. They will clarify the figures and tables, and provide you with instructions on how to increase the motivation of your employees.

What is the scientific basis of our motivation model?

Our motivation model uses the principles of the Self-Determination Theory (SDT). This theory has proven its worth over forty years in a variety of motivational studies.

The SDT makes a unique distinction between the intensity and the quality of motivation. We therefore not only assess the degree of motivation of your employees, but also the kind of motivation they exhibit. This is because we believe that higher motivation does not necessarily lead to better results, if the motivation is of a low quality.

Autonomous motivation is more powerful than controlled motivation. Employees, who score high on this aspect, understand the fundamental meaning underlying their work. And they perform their work with greater freedom and spontaneity. Controlled motivation arises from external or internal pressure. It is therefore of inferior quality.

Securex developed the motivation model in collaboration with professors, HR managers, HR consultants, industrial psychologists and statisticians. It takes into account the latest literature on motivation and HR, and uses an extensive international database of benchmark data to compare your results.
