Which children are entitled to child benefit?
- All underage, school-age children, who are part of your family;
- all children of age, until the age of 25 on condition that they:
- are associated with an employer under an apprenticeship agreement:
- are students or are preparing a graduate thesis;
- are registered as a jobseeker with the Flemish Employment Agency.
- disabled children until the age of 21.
Which children are entitled to child benefit?
- All your children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces on condition that they are part of your family. The same applies to relatives of your spouse or cohabiting partner and all adopted children of either partner;
- All brothers and sisters, who are part of the family – including stepbrothers and sisters;
- All children who have been entrusted to the family’s care subject to a legal decision;
- All other children for whom the Minister of Social Affairs has granted a departure from the rule.
The entitlement to child benefit can be registered once-only. Are various people entitled to the benefit? Then the following order is applicable:
- Father, mother, stepfather, stepmother;
- The eldest of the other claimants.
What about child benefit after a child has finished school?
A child that is no longer school-age is entitled to child benefit:
- During school holidays: Summer, Christmas and Easter holidays;
- During the second session in the frame of education that is not higher education;
- During the waiting period as a job-seeking recent graduate;
- If he or she attends classes at secondary level at least 17 hours a week;
- If he or she is registered in higher education or open university for a minimum of 27 credits;
- As long as he or she is registered in special education;
- As long as he or she is preparing his graduate thesis (maximum one year);
- If he or she is studying in the EU or the US;
- As long as he or she earns less than 452.76 euros per month in the frame of his traineeship or work placement.
